Wellbrock get’s defense and
offense behind him
After nearly an inning in a half of baseball last night, a 45 minute the rain delay turned into a postponement until 11:00 this morning, when the game resumed. Thunder and lightning started about 7:50 P.M., 10 minutes before a strong storm drenched the area.
Ace, Chase Wellbrock pitched a one hit shutout to help The Brenham Cubs defeat Texas City 4-0 in game two of the Class 4A Region III Semifinals to sweep the series Saturday afternoon at Reckling Park. With the win Brenham advanced to the Region Finals where they will face the winner of Friendswood/Port Neches –Groves, next week.
With the graduation scheduled for 8 p.m., Brenham made sure it would be there in enough time to celebrate.
The Cubs won game one 6-1 Thursday night.
Brenham got an overall team effort for the win. Defense played great weather coming up with a spear to keep the bases empty or a double play to end an inning.
“We just got out here and battled from the first pitch all the way to the end of the game, we came out here focused, we got up early this morning, we got out here as soon as the game started we were on defense. We got on offense and manufactured two runs and that got the momentum going our way, “said Brenham’s Pitching Coach Mark.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the second inning, Shortstop Drake Roberts singled home Jeremy Hall and Ty Schlottmann to give Brenham a 2-0 lead.
“It was a well played game with only one error in the game. The kids were ready on both sides. They just played a little better than we did today. I thought we hit the ball really well; we had some good at bats unfortunately one hit doesn’t show for much but we put the ball in play and we were focused, we just didn’t get balls dropping. They didn’t walk any of us. They played really good baseball (speaking of Brenham),”said Texas City’s Coach Mike Schwager.
Wellbrock went the distanced striking out six while pushing his record to (15-0).
“We definitely came out ready to play this game, we wanted to play it yesterday but the rain kept us from that but we stayed focused on the bus ride back yesterday and this morning we came focused,” said Brenham’s Pitcher Wellbrock,
The Stingrays (25-15) could never put together a string of hits against the tough University signee Wellbrock.
“I think we did enough pitching and defense but our bats didn’t show up today. All we could do is our best. It was pretty hot out there but I could have done a better job, I had too many walks but I can’t do anything about it. Reaching the semifinals was a pretty good run, it’s the farthest we’ve been since I’ve been here,” said Texas City’s Pitcher Kyle Kern.
Notes: The Cubs are in the playoffs for the 27th consecutive year.
