Yates alumni Young is the latest NBA draft since 1987

Not since the days of Michael Young and Rickie Winslow, have Jack Yates High School had a player drafted in the NBA.  Winslow was the last, drafted in 1987 by the Chicago Bulls in the 2nd round, as the 5th pick and 28th overall selected in the NBA.
In 1984, Young was selected in the 1st round by the Boston Celtics.  24th pick, and 24th overall player drafted.
Both Winslow and Young starred with the University of Houston Cougars Basketball team, known as the Phi Slama Jama from 1982 to 1984.  Other star and NBA players on that team were Clyde Drexler Hakeem Olajuwon and Larry Micheaux.
Drexler and Olajuwon were key players in helping the Rockets to back-to-back NBA titles from 1993-95.
In comes the Lions latest alumni Joseph Young, the son of Michael, who was the 43rd overall pick, in the 2nd round, by the Indiana Pacers.  The Pac-12 Player of the year led the University of Oregon in scoring his last two seasons and guided Yates to back-to-back state championships in 2009-10.
According to NBA Scouts, Joseph, a scoring point guard who can heat up from 3-point land in a hurry.  Like the Young’s, Justin Winslow, son of Rickie,  will began his NBA career with the Miami Heat after starring at Duke University and St. Johns High School in Houston.
The 6’6” guard entered the draft after one season with the Blue Devils.  To no one’s surprise to see Winslow and other star players, including teammates Jahlil Oakafor and Tyus Jones, who led Duke to the 2015 NCAA Title, were one and done as well.
