Helps Lions
Yates kept their undefeated season alive with a 57-50 win over The Angleton Wildcats in the night cap of a double header at The Campbell Center Friday night. It was the third time they faced the Wildcats in four years, taking two of the three playoff games.
It wasn’t the prettiest win the Lady Lions had this season but they’ll take it. “I told the kids at halftime that this is the worst half we’ve played all year but I let them know that we still have a chance,” said Yates Coach Augbon.
A terrible shooting first quarter yielded 1 out of 22 shots from the field. A lone three pointer coming from Jaeisha Johnson and three free throws From Deana Darjean gave the Lions just 6 points at the end of the first quarter.
Senior post Mariah Lee was active in the paint giving the Wildcats problems with her size and ability to create space.
The win moves the Lady Lions into the quarterfinals of the class 4A region III playoffs, where they’ll face the winner of the Washington/Manvel game next week.
Mariah Lee led the way for the Lions scoring 26 points while team Deana Darjean dropped in 20.
Angleton had several chances to increase the early lead in the second quarter but miscues kept the Lions within striking distance.
The crowd watched as both teams battled to a 24 all tie at the half.
In the third quarter Yates jumped out to a 4 point lead when Lee score from the low post and dropped in two more from the free throw line after being fouled.
The lions led by as many as 13 points in the fourth quarter.
Ceteria Foster led Angleton with 18 points followed by Andrea Carter’s 10.
