Over the years, Texas has produced its share of great athletes. Baseball, Basketball, football, track and field, to name a few, are sports in which the Lone Star State excels.
Currently, we highlight track and field, where 89 young athletes from USA Track and Field, representing various regions of the nation, performed in the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
A total of 72 out of 89 athletes were selected by USA Ultimate from a combination of open and women’s teams for the WFDF Junior Ultimate Championships.
Top finishers comprised track talents Zacchaeus Brocks, Le’Ezra Brown, Madeline Cooper, Jayden DeLeon, Blake Hamilton, Mariah and Mia Maxwell, Dillion Mitchell, Kylie Neira, Simon Roselli, Tate Taylor, and Quincy Wilson. Six of the 12 are not from Texas, including Brock, representing Michigan; Brown, from North Carolina; Cooper, from Atlanta, Georgia; DeLeon, from Elkridge, Maryland; Roselli, from Washington; and Wilson, from Chesapeake, Virginia.
Tate Taylor, a prominent figure from San Antonio, Texas, was instrumental in sweeping three events: the 100 meters (9.94), 200 meters (19.83), and the 4×100-meter relay (38.16). Taylor partnered with Brown, Hamilton, and Mitchell to achieve the record-breaking time. Taylor also became the first man to earn gold in a single World U20 Championships. He picked up his second AOW award after collecting the 29th USATF athlete of the week award.
Hamilton also claimed the silver medal (20.31) in the 200-meter dash, finishing behind Taylor. Just under three months ago, the former Katy athlete secured the 200-meter title at the Texas UIL State Championships.
Le’Ezra Brown delivered an outstanding performance, clinching the gold medal in the 110-Meter Hurdles while equaling the U20 World record time of 12.72 seconds. Zacchaeus Brocks secured the bronze medal in the same event with a time of 12.98 seconds. He is also recognized as an elite athlete, having won the title at the USATF U20 Championships in June 2026.
In the women’s events, two of the most thrilling competitions of the evening were the 100 and 200 Meter dashes, where Mia triumphed over Jamaica’s talented Shanoya Douglass to claim the gold in both events. Mia’s twin sister, Mariah, finished in fifth place. The races unfolded almost like two distinct narratives, as spectators witnessed Mia (22.37) initially trailing Douglass in the curve (22.68) before ultimately surging ahead. Twin sister Mariah concluded the race with the bronze medal in a time of 22.77 seconds.
Other World U20 Championship winners saw Maddi Cooper emerge victorious in the women’s 100 Hurdles, clocking in at 12.91 seconds. In the men’s discus, Simon Rosselli not only won gold but also established a new American record with a throw of 66.39 meters, exceeding the former record by more than a meter. Furthermore, Jayden Deleon claimed victory in the men’s 400 meters with a time of 44.47 and was instrumental in securing gold for the men’s 4×400-meter relay team. Maddi Cooper won the women’s 100 Hurdles in a time of 12.91.
