24 unanswered 4th quarter points
stuns Grambling
The Tigers are two wins away from a long awaited time that dates back to more than 40 years ago. 1968 was the last time TSU won the SWAC but not outright, sharing the title with Alcorn State and Grambling State.
Arvell Nelson’s ten yard touchdown run capped a 41-34 (OT) Texas Southern University comeback victory over the Grambling State Tigers Thursday night at Delmar Stadium.
The win was monumental for the Tigers, sharing a first place tie with Grambling State in the West with one game remaining and a chance to win the SWAC Western Division. A win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff would put TSU in the SWAC Championship Game in Birmingham, Alabama on December 11.
Down by 17 points in the 4th quarter, TSU scored 24 unanswered points shocking Grambling State. The loss also snapped Grambling State’s eight game winning streak.
“It’s very disappointing, the loss but we need to learn how to finish out games,” said Grambling State’s Running Back Coach Shawn Gibbs.
Grambling led early on a 38 yard field goal from Zoltan Riazzo.
A Kiare Thompson fumble at the Grambling State’s 20 yard line set up TSU’s first score that watched Marcus Wright blast up the middle for a 4 yard touchdown run to give the tigers a 7-3 lead with 5:40 to go in the first quarter.
Grambling State responded with a 66 yard drive to reclaim the lead 10-7 when Thompson redeemed his self burning TSU’s defense for a 64 yard touchdown catch and run touchdown.
From that point both teams scored touchdowns before Grambling State led 34-17.
Texas Southern (7-3, 7-1) entered the 4th quarter down by 17 points before scoring 10 points on Nelson’s 23 yard touchdown pass to Richard Samuel and Robert Hersh’s tying 20 yard field goal with 15 seconds to go setting the stage for the OT thriller.
In overtime, a goal line stance ended Grambling State’s hopes on 4th down and one from the one yard line.
A record breaking night couldn’t put a smile on Frank Warren’s Face who rewrote the rushing yards in a season, the most yards for a senior and career for Grambling State.
Grambling State (8-2, 7-1) will face Southern University in the State Farm Bayou Classic on November 27th.
