The common grounds between crosstown rivals, North Shore and Westfield should be familiar when the two meet this Thursday night at George stadium in a battle of No. 1 vs. No. 2. North Shore (2-0), who entered the season top-ranked, will be facing its second ranked Houston area team for the second time in three weeks. In the season opener, Katy failed in its quest, 35-20. And last week, Ridge Point walked away with a goose egg, after taking a 44-0 thrashing.
Westfield’s shares a similar story in its first two victories. First by avenging a 38-28 lost to Lamar in 2016. Coming away with a 31-14 win. A week later, the Mustangs exploded for 53 offensive points while surrendering only six points to Alief Taylor.
North shore will be led by super sophomore quarterback Dematrius Davis, who played well in last seasons playoff games. Junior running back Zach Evans should pick up where he left off. Davis will have protection up front from substantial offensive linemen. Tony Bradford and Jordan Revels will shore up the defensive line while the secondary looks to keep its area covered.
Westfield, in the absence of district MVP quarterback Terrance Gipson, will start senior Ra’Quon Washington. Washington is noted for his quick feet and adds a strong arm to its arsenal. Gipson went down with a season-ending knee injury in Westfields win against Alief Taylor. Also, expect to see tailback Rayshawn James carrying the ball behind three returning all-district limen. The defense will rely on its speed and talent to make stops.
However, it won’t be an easy task stopping these top-flight offenses which can light up the scoreboard quickly.
The two have met in the last four seasons with Westfield winning three. So its safe to say North Shore will be looking to get the last laugh. That won’t give either team an edge as both possess skill, speed, and talent on both sides of the ball. They even have the same mascot. The Mustangs. The school colors are similar. Black, red and white.
Though its early on the season, a lot is at stake. The winner will likely hold the top spot in the area and take home bragging rights.
In 2017, Westfield won, 37-20. In 2016, North shore won 36-16. In 2015, Westfield won, 31-28. Westfield won, 36-27 in 2014
